Bring a Better Plant Question to a Kitsap Master Gardener Clinic

Bring clear plant observations, photographs and a focused question to a Kitsap Master Gardener clinic or official inquiry channel.

A plant-help conversation is easier when you can describe the plant, its setting, and what changed. Prepare that information before using WSU Kitsap Master Gardener resources, then check the current clinic or office instructions for how to ask your question.

Do not rely on a previous season’s clinic calendar. Confirm the location, schedule, and any directions about photographs or samples before traveling or collecting plant material.

Describe the whole setting

Write down whether the plant is in the ground or a container, approximately when it was planted, and the light and watering conditions you have observed. Include its name only if you know it reliably; a photograph of the original label can help preserve that information.

Record when you first noticed the concern and whether it appears on one plant, several plants, or part of a plant. Keep observations separate from a diagnosis such as “fungus” or “nutrient deficiency.”

Make photographs answer different questions

A wider view can show the plant’s setting. A closer image can show the affected area. A label photo can identify the product or variety you bought. Note the date and avoid altering the image in ways that change the symptom’s appearance.

Ask the clinic what material it wants before bringing a sample, particularly if you are uncertain what the plant is. Do not apply a treatment merely to see whether it changes the photograph.

Keep the answer with the history

Record the advice, its limits, and any follow-up requested. If identification remains uncertain, preserve that uncertainty in your notes.

Master Gardener education is a community gardening resource. Its presence in this guide does not establish that a garden, product, or recommended practice is certified organic. Confirm any specific growing-standard question through the relevant authoritative source.
